INDUSTRY TIPS  ·  HAIR COLOR

Elevating the salon experience starts with understanding the craft behind the color.

Hair color is one of the most transformative services in the beauty industry — and one of the most misunderstood. After years behind the chair, I’ve learned that the difference between a good result and a great one isn’t just technical skill. It’s the combination of education, communication, and a deep respect for the science that drives every formula.

Whether you’re a fellow stylist looking to refine your craft or a client trying to understand what goes into your appointment, here’s what I believe every person in that salon chair — on either side — should know.

1. Consult before you commit

The consultation isn’t a formality — it’s the foundation of every successful color service. Before I mix a single gram of product, I ask about lifestyle, maintenance preferences, hair history, and even water quality at home. Hard water, prior chemical treatments, and daily heat use all affect how color behaves and lasts.

A 10-minute consultation can prevent a 3-hour correction. Invest the time upfront and the results speak for themselves.

For clients: be honest about everything you’ve put on your hair — box color included. There’s no judgment here, only information I need to get your result right.

2. Understand the underlying pigment

Every lift and deposit decision I make is based on the natural underlying pigment of a client’s hair. Hair color science follows a predictable warm-to-cool progression as levels lighten. Skipping this understanding leads to brassiness, muddiness, or breakage — the most common complaints I hear from clients who’ve had disappointing experiences elsewhere.

Knowing where you’re starting and where you want to land — and understanding the steps in between — is what separates a colorist from a technician. The best results are built on a roadmap, not a guess.

3. Tone is everything

Lift gets you to the right level. Tone gets you to the right color. These are two separate jobs, and treating them that way is how I consistently deliver results that photograph beautifully and age gracefully between appointments.

I’ve seen stunning blonde transformations fall flat because the toner wasn’t refreshed properly, and I’ve seen clients with dark hair walk out with dimensions that made their color look like it cost twice what they paid. The toner is the detail that completes the picture.

At-home toning shampoos and glosses are your best friend between appointments — ask me which ones I recommend for your specific color.

4. Maintenance is a partnership

Color doesn’t exist in a vacuum. The work we do in the salon is only as good as the care that follows. I’m specific with every client about which products to use, how often to wash, and how to protect color from sun and heat exposure. These aren’t upsells — they’re professional guidance built into the service.

The clients who get the longest-lasting, most vibrant results are the ones who treat their hair maintenance like a routine, not an afterthought. Sulphate-free shampoo, UV protection spray, and a quality weekly mask will do more for your color than any in-salon treatment on its own.

5. Slow down to speed up

One of the biggest professional lessons I’ve carried throughout my career is this: rushing a color service is the fastest way to create a problem that takes three times longer to fix. Proper saturation, correct processing time, and methodical sectioning may not look dramatic in the chair — but they show up in the result.

Precision isn’t slow. It’s efficient. Every shortcut in technique is borrowed time that gets paid back with compound interest.

Hair color at its best is a conversation between artistry and chemistry. It’s what gets me excited to be behind the chair every single day. Whether you’re a new client or a longtime regular, I hope these insights give you a clearer picture of what we’re building together — one appointment at a time.
